The draw took place in the cafe at 11.30 fishing would be from 1.30-6.30pm and with 20 booked in Phil Briscoe ( the boss ) had left the burr bank open for us and had pegged it 2 in and miss 1 all down the bank from peg 4 to peg 32. With a gentle breeze blowing down towards the arena end peg 32 looked to be a good draw but to be honest i was not fussed where i drew because i felt we would all catch on here on a afternoon match. At the draw i pulled out 13 and stav drew 25 but as i said i don't think it's going to make much difference today,( by the way the wind assisted end peg 32 was drawn by Grant Albutt???) the shouts of lucky b*****d were met by a rue smile from Grant.
As we were in for a bagging session i decided to set up 3 rods and 2 pole rigs, i set up a pellet wagg, splasher wagg and a straight lead for the rods, for the pole rigs i went for a 5m line out in-front and 7m down the edge towards empty peg 12. For company on peg 11 was a good mate of mine Tim Guise and next to me on peg 14 another mate Danny Ashington so at least we could have a good crack if nothing else and with Phil Briscoe (the bearded porn star) on peg 10 we were all set for an afternoon of mickey talking.
For bait i had brought 5 tins of meat and the same of corn, 2 bags of fishery 8mm pellets and some white paste. On the whistle i put 3 pots of meat & corn on the 5m line and 2 of the same on the edge line, as i was potting in Danny had only put one pot on the pole line and was playing his first carp on the pellet wagg, by the time i had sorted the pole lines out and messing about getting the pellet wagg ready Danny was playing carp no2? Great 5 mins gone and i was already 2 fish behind? I chucked out the wagg and after 3-4 casts i had my first bite on a 8mm pellet set 2 1/2 ft deep and a nice 8lb'er was it the net ( Danny was on no3 ?). I stuck with the wagg and after the first hour i had got 4, Tim 5 and Danny was on 6, i decided to stick with it for another hour while feeding my 5m pole line all the time with meat & corn and keeping an eye out to see if anyone comes in on the pole line and begins to catch. Hour 2 passed and i put 3 more carp in the net while we were not bagging you don't need to many fish here for a good weight as the carp go from 3lb to 20lb+ with lots of fish in the 8-15lb range. With 7 fish in the net and the bites starting to get fewer i decided to have a look on the straight lead at the same time Danny had got the same idea, first chuck on the lead with a 8mm pellet lassoed wrapped in paste the rod got ripped around and carp 8 was on his way to the net. Next chuck the same result but so had Danny 2 fish in 2 throws on the lead, we both thought that the lack of bites on the wagg was due to the change in wind direction and the cloud had come over chilling the water sending the fish down ( and me it sent me reaching for my fleece). Another 20 mins on the lead produced just one skimmer so a look on the pole was called for, the only one i could see catching on the pole was Briscoe he was catching skimmers one a bung on corn & pellet. After 10 mins on the pole the float buried with yards for black hydro screaming after it ( it was time to hang on), after a good 5 mins battle my 0.18 line held firm and i was netting a 12lb mirrior . Next put another bite but this one only lasted 3 seconds and came off, i stayed on the pole for another 20 mins without another bite so back on the wagg i went but this time went for the 10 gram splasher wagg instead of the 4 ssg standard wagg i had been using. Around 10 mins of chucking the splasher wagg i was rewarded with a carp without feeding the carp just coming to to noise of the wagg and next chuck the same result just as i picked up the catty to feed. We were now into the last hour of the match and Phil was starting to catch carp on the pole & paste so another look on the pole was called for but after 10 bitless mins on 5m and up the edge i went back on the splasher for the remainder of the match. Danny had stopped catching on anything he tried but had hooked a beast on the pole which he thought was foul- hooked but as he played it pulling yards of elastic out of his puller kit there was and almighty bang as his top 2 became a top 4 ( i tried not to laugh honest) immediately he shouted up to Phil Briscoe "these Maver poles are shit" Briscoe answered "that's Daiwa crap" ( it was a Sensas pole) i was still unable to cast due to crying with laughter as the banter went back and forth. In the last part of the match i had another 3 fish ending up with 15 carp and a lone skimmer, i thought Danny still had more fish than me but all mine were big fish it would be close, Tim had suffered catching for the first 2 hours then next to nothing for 3 hours, Briscoe had caught loads of skimmers on the pole & corn then switching to paste when he had his first carp and bagged on carp for the last hour.
When the scales got to us there was a 121lb on peg 5 and Briscoe had 102lb, Tim had 67lb then it was my turn my 15 carp went 123lb ( average over 8lb apiece) and put me into the lead by 2lb, Danny was next with 112lb and i was well made up to have turned it round after Danny got off to flier start. There was no more big weights until we got to peg 22 and young Kurtis Tranter pulled his nets out we all new there was a new leader with a brilliant 170lb and some proper lumps one fish going 20lb 5oz! then as we looked around it looked like he was pleasure fishing as the next 2 pallets down to stav on peg 25 were empty one guy had not turned up and giving Kurtis 2 pallets to his right and one to his left empty. But after saying that you still have to catch em' and the lad had done really well and made the most of the room, Stav on the other hand had a nightmare losing some 10 fish down the edge but still had 89lb getting broke on 0.18 line de-elasticated? ( must try harder mate battered by 17 year old lol?). Grant on the end had caught well and put 113lb on the scales next to Neil mcNinnon who was being videoed for an online company with a sort of stop watch feature obviously his concentration suffering weighing 70 odd lb and losing loads of fish.
This was a great match lovely sunny day, good company lots of great crack and of course loads of fish at a great fishery. Well done to young Kurtis and thanks to Phil for a great day. Cheers.
A late draw at Larford's speci lake produced a match with outstanding weights. Fishing from 1.30 to 6.30pm the carp and bream responded well to both pellet waggler and pole fished shorted.
Winner on the day was young Kurtis Tranter (Grant Albutt Baits) who drew peg 22. Fishing short, Kurtis caught carp all afternoon on meat finishing the day with 170-14-0.
Second on the day was Simon West (Storeys) with a superb 123-6-0 of specimen carp from peg 13. Simon fished pellet waggler and 8mm hook baits.
Third on the day was John Catermole (Maver) who also fished pellet waggler from peg 5 landing carp to 15lbs.
Fourth placed Grant Albutt (Garbolino) drew peg 32 to land carp and bream on both pellet waggler and pole short.
20 anglers fished with the top 6 all landing over 100lbs.
